Band History

Originally formed in 1958, the Atlanta Concert Band, Tony Belcastro, conductor, performed until 1969. Challenges in securing funding and a permanent conductor caused the band to discontinue activities in 1969.

In 1973 some of the original members reformed the band, under conductor James J. Sedlack. On June 23 of that year, after six rehearsals, the band presented its first concert at Central City Park (now known as Woodruff Park) in downtown Atlanta. The 25-member band repeated the concert that evening at Lenox Square Mall and has maintained a year 'round schedule ever since. Upon Mr. Sedlack’s retirement in 1984, Mr. John P. Miller became conductor and director of music. The organization became a corporation in 1976 known as The Concert Band of Georgia, Inc. The name was officially changed to Atlanta Concert Band, Inc. in 2000.

Through the years, the Atlanta Concert Band has performed at hundreds of locations in and around the City of Atlanta, throughout the state of Georgia, and at several locations across the Southeast. The Atlanta Concert Band regularly presents a concert season consisting of three to five formal concerts, several outdoor, casual concerts, and a series of outreach performances by its smaller ensembles for special audiences throughout the community.

The Atlanta Concert Band is incorporated as a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization, and is supported through private & corporate donations, foundation grants and awards, and grants received through several government arts agencies, including:
